South Texas ISD Board approves the district's new Strategic Plan for 2024-2029

South Texas ISD is excited to share its 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, which was approved by the Board of Directors during the March 26 board meeting. Developed alongside The Center for Model Schools, this plan will drive the success of the district over the next five years.

Other Board actions

  • Alberto Tudon, Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) Coordinator, reported to the STISD Board of Directors on the TIA Expansion/Modification Application.
  • Dr. Nereyda Trevino, Chief Academic Officer, reported to the board on the district wide and campus-specific programs to be held during the summer.
  • The STISD Board of Directors voted to approve the AIA contract with Gerlach Builders for the Health Professions Gymnasium project, and authorized the Board President to execute the contract.
  • The STISD Board of Directors approved a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a Special Education Co-Op with La Villa ISD.
  • Amanda Odom, Administrator for Public Relations & Marketing, provided a report to the full board on the preliminary planning by the Community & Governmental Relations Committee for the district's upcoming 60-year anniversary event to be held in Nov. 2024.
  • Board Vice President Dr. Sylvia Sánchez Garza and Board member Yolanda Kamel reported to their fellow board members on their experience attending the 2024
    TASB Texas Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC.
  • The Board approved the following new Professional and Non-Professional positions for the 2024-2025 school year and the Announcement of Vacancies:
    Professional positions: Co-op Speech Language Pathologist, Co-op Educational Diagnostician, Co-op Licensed Specialist in School Psychology, Special Education Teachers (6) | Non-Professional positions: Co-op Special Education Clerk, Co-op Bookkeeper, Special Education Classroom Aide (1)

Invite your friends & family! The Tour STISD Spring Campus Showcases continue on Saturday, April 13, at four of our campuses - Health Professions in Mercedes, Science Academy in Mercedes, Rising Scholars Academy in San Benito, and Virtual Academy (in-person in Mercedes and online via Zoom).

These free events are open to the public and are perfect opportunities for prospective students and families to tour the schools, meet administrators, staff and students, and participate in family-friendly activities.

Join us: Upcoming events for parents of children with Autism

South Texas ISD is hosting events in April for parents of children with Autism. There will be a Parent Empowerment Session Series throughout the month, as well as a Parent Connection Autism Support Meeting on April 10.

Join us on Wednesday, April 10, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for a South Texas ISD Parent Connection presentation - "Supports for Parents with Children with High Functioning Autism" by Dr. Terri McGinnis.

The presentation will be held in-person at the South Texas ISD Learning Center (7001 E. Expressway 83, Mercedes, TX), as well as virtually via Zoom.

Congratulations! Rising Scholars Academy celebrates its designation as a 2024 Texas School to Watch

STISD Rising Scholars Academy (RSA) in San Benito celebrated its recent designation as a 2024 Texas “School to Watch” (STW) during a campus assembly held on March 28.

Dr. Billy Pringle, Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) Deputy Director of Business Operations, Professional Development, Governmental Relations and High School Services, attended on behalf of the organization to present a banner to the campus community to commemorate the award.

According to the Texas STW program, state leaders selected RSA for its academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structure and processes. RSA joins approximately 60 other campuses across the state with this distinction and honor.

Five STISD teams qualify for Final Design Review in Houston after March Critical Design Review

STISD students participating in the NASA HUNCH Program pose with NASA engineers at the Critical Design Review on March 19.

Rio Grande Valley students participating in the Engineering Design, Biomedical and Software Development challenges as part of this year’s NASA HUNCH program converged at the STISD Central Administration Teaching & Learning Center on March 19 for the RGV NASA HUNCH Critical Design Review. During the event, students presented their completed projects to NASA engineers, for a chance to be selected to attend the NASA HUNCH Final Design Review to be held at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston April 16 and 17.

Five participating teams from STISD were selected to take their projects to the next level, including:

  • Science Academy: Two-Step System to Combat Biofilms: David S. Hovey, Ana-Laura Tamez, Estrella Palomo
  • Science Academy: IV Fluid Admin: Luis Gasca, Taylor Admire, Ethan Cheng, Diego Pina
  • Science Academy: Soothwave, Mental Health: Daniella Cedrillo, Sumita Dantu, Lauren Krawczynski
  • Health Professions: Astro Naps, Mental Health: Ariska Nguyen, Zaid Kokash, Vivian Jasso, Gael Jasso
  • Science Academy: Light Therapy Device, Mental Health: Makena Silva, AJ Simpson, Victoria Seguin

There were 68 teams from across the nation invited to present their projects in the Biomedical category of NASA HUNCH, and over 10 percent of those came from the RGV.

Seniors: The Education Foundation of STISD is now accepting applications for this year's scholarships

Photo of a graduate in cap and gown. The Education Foundation is awarding 4 $2,000 scholarships per campus. Apply by April 23.

The Education Foundation of South Texas ISD is providing $2,000 scholarships for graduating seniors from all four STISD high schools.

This year the Foundation will award 16 scholarships total, 4 - $2,000 scholarships per each STISD high school campus.

The link to the online application is available within the Education Foundation of STISD 2024 Scholarship Application section on the district website here. A PDF copy of the application can also be accessed at the same link, and hard copies can be picked up at the student's campus counseling office, if preferred.

Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, no matter the method used.
