A Milestone Moment at the Special Olympics

We had an incredible time on Saturday, Feb. 21, cheering on our STISD students and others from partner districts in the STISD Tri-County Cooperative as they competed for the first time in the Special Olympics basketball competition. Designing for Space: STISD Hosts NASA HUNCH Event

In mid-February, STISD hosted a two-day NASA HUNCH (High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware) event at the Central Administration Teaching & Learning Center in Mercedes and at STISD Medical Professions in Olmito.

Through the NASA HUNCH program, students design and develop prototypes with the potential to be used in space—an incredible, real-world opportunity.

Day 1: Students from Medical Professions competed against another Rio Grande Valley school in the HUNCH Culinary Challenge, creating a meal designed to nourish astronauts on space missions. Thank you to our panel of chefs, business owners, culinary experts, nutritionists and educators for their thoughtful feedback and support. We look forward to seeing if our team advances to compete at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Day 2: Students from Health Professions, Medical Professions and Science Academy presented their projects to NASA engineers during the region’s Critical Design Review. Using the feedback received, students will refine their work and submit final designs for a chance to advance to the Final Design Review at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in April.

Virtual Academy visits Texas State Aquarium

Our Virtual Academy students aren’t just logging in from home for classes during the school week. They’re also getting out, connecting with peers and bringing lessons to life through shared experiences with opportunities like these.

This is what learning looks like beyond the virtual classroom - a day on the road, field-tripping, sharing laughs face-to-face and making memories with the people you do school with every day - just this time, off-screen.

Science Academy hosts State Qualifying Esports tournament - 'To the Moon' - named after former student and Esports competitor

This was more than just competition - it was community. Schools across the Valley came together for a special 'To the Moon' Esports Tournament created in honor of one of our own from Science Academy - a passionate player, dedicated student and an even better friend.

Seeing so many teams unite was a powerful reminder of the positive impact ‘Galactic Moon’ had on those around him. His love for the game brought people together, and that same spirit was felt in every match played.
