Steven Cortez was recently hired as Chief of Security Operations for South Texas ISD, bringing over two decades of experience in law enforcement to the role.

Chief Cortez received his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University in Alabama, and is a graduate of the 285th session of the FBI National Police Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Chief Cortez is committed to ensuring the safety and security of students and staff across the district. Prior to his current position, Steven Cortez proudly served in various leadership roles at the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office - most recently as the Captain of Financial Services and Administration, where he oversaw critical departments and managed a $96 million annual budget. His expertise spans patrol operations, investigations, training, and community engagement.

A devoted family man, Cortez has been married for 22 years and is a proud father of three children. He is an active member of First Baptist Church Weslaco and values the importance of faith and community in his personal and professional life. Chief Cortez's approach to law enforcement emphasizes strategic initiatives, mentorship, and building community trust to enhance public safety in educational environments.
