STISD Board Secretary Sánchez Garza Reelected to State Association Board

(Austin) - Sylvia Sánchez Garza of South Texas ISD has been reelected to a three-year term on the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors, representing TASB Region 1, Position B. The election was held during the Association’s 2022 Delegate Assembly on Sept. 24 in San Antonio.

Sánchez Garza has served on the South Texas ISD Board since 2008. She is currently the board secretary. She also is on the Education Foundation of South Texas ISD, where she has served for 17 years. On the national level, she serves on the board of the National Hispanic Council of School Board Members as the Southern Region Director.

She has a doctorate in leadership studies from Our Lady of the Lake University’s School of Business and Leadership, a master’s in educational administration from Lamar University, a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing, and a bachelor’s in English from The University of Texas–Pan American.

Sánchez Garza is a 2012 graduate of Leadership TASB and a Master Trustee. She is active in her community, currently serving as chair of the Museum of South Texas History Board. She also has served on the American Cancer Society’s steering committee and helped organize local Relay for Life events. She is a member of Texas Authors, the Writer’s League of Texas, and the South Texas Literacy Coalition.

Professionally, she and her husband own B.I.C. Development and Garco Ranch Communities. Sánchez Garza is an author and her book Cascarones has won several literary awards.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state.
