South Texas ISD Medical Professions 'Grillin' Angels' cook-off team takes top honors in division at Los Fresnos Rodeo Cowboy Cook-off

The ‘Grillin’ Angels’ team representing South Texas Independent School District (STISD) Medical Professions in Olmito found the recipe for success, taking home a coveted cutting board award at the Los Fresnos Rodeo Cowboy Cook-Off held last month.

The team competed in three categories – brisket, ribs, and chicken – earning top marks and first place overall in the high school division. The team includes Medical Professions students Emma Escalon, Anyssa Gomez, Anahi Hinojosa, Mia Juarez, Destiny Migoya, Frida Monroy, and Lilliann Olvera, and is led by Medical Professions Culinary Arts instructor Maria Garza.

Although enrolled in Medical Professions’ Culinary Arts program of study and committed to SkillsUSA, prior to this event the participating students did not have experience with cook-off competitions. They prepared diligently for the event, researching and experimenting with rubs and marinades to determine what they wanted to use.

South Texas Independent School District (STISD) Medical Professions is one of seven schools in state- and nationally-recognized STISD. The public school district offers tuition-free college- and career-preparation to students from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. It includes four high schools serving grades 9-12 – South Texas ISD Health Professions (Health Professions) in Mercedes, South Texas ISD Medical Professions (Medical Professions) in Olmito, South Texas ISD Science Academy (Science Academy) in Mercedes, and South Texas ISD World Scholars (World Scholars) in Edinburg – two middle schools serving grades 6 through 8, South Texas ISD Preparatory Academy (Preparatory Academy) in Edinburg and South Texas ISD Rising Scholars Academy (Rising Scholars Academy) in San Benito, and one stand-alone virtual school to serve students in grades 6-12 – South Texas ISD Virtual Academy (Virtual Academy).
