The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors has elected Sylvia Sánchez Garza of South Texas ISD to an interim position on the TASB Board, representing TASB Region 1, Position B.

Garza has served on the South Texas ISD Board for 14 years. She is currently the board secretary. She also is on the Education Foundation of South Texas ISD, where she has served for 17 years.

She has a doctorate in leadership studies from Our Lady of the Lake University’s School of Business and Leadership, a master’s in educational administration from Lamar University, and a bachelor of arts in English with a minor in sociology from The University of Texas–Pan American. This year, she is on track to complete a master of fine arts in creative writing from National University.

Garza is a 2012 graduate of Leadership TASB and Master Trustee. She is active in her community, currently serving as chair-elect of the Museum of South Texas History Board. She also has served on the American Cancer Society’s steering committee and helped organize local Relay for Life events. She is a member of Texas Authors, the Writer’s League of Texas, and the South Texas Literacy Coalition.

Professionally, she and her husband own B.I.C. Development and Garco Ranch Communities. She is an author and her book Cascarones has won several literary awards, including three gold star recognitions.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.4 million public school students. For more information on TASB, visit
