Tis the season of giving: Medical Academy HOSA members donate funds to Valley Regional Medical Center to fund women needing mammograms
Students in the HOSA- Future Health Professionals organization at South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy) in Olmito presented Valley Regional Medical Center (VRMC) in Brownsville with a $600 check on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to pay for ten mammogram screenings for women in need.
Every October, the HOSA organization hosts an on-campus fundraiser to promote breast cancer awareness. All proceeds have traditionally gone to the national Susan G. Komen organization.
This year, Francisco Acevedo, a freshman from Brownsville and a HOSA member, advocated for taking a different direction and donating the funds to a local hospital – VRMC – that would, in turn, supply funding for women in the Rio Grande Valley in need of mammograms.
VRMC’s CEO, Art Garza, committed to matching the amount of money that was donated to the hospital, for a grand total of $1,200, which allows for 20 mammogram vouchers.
