For the past three seasons, the Rising Scholars Academy of South Texas (Rising Scholars) Lady Rockets basketball team has qualified to compete at the regional tournament, and this year for the first time ever, the Lady Rockets clinched the win and will advance to the Texas Charter School Academic and Athletic League State Tournament. 

 

Eight teams competed at the regional tournament held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at IDEA Owassa in Pharr. The Lady Rockets met IDEA Weslaco on the bracket for the championship game, and defeated the team 34-13, earning the regional championship title. 

 

The team will travel to Georgetown and compete for the state championship on Saturday, Feb. 9. 

 

Coach Amy Benavidez has led the Lady Rockets to two undefeated seasons, landing them the title of Division Champions, and has earned a seat at the regional championship game for three seasons in a row. 

 

The 2018-2019 Lady Rockets team of 12 consists of: Hannah Campbell, 8th-grader from Harlingen; Mia Gonzalez, 8th-grader from Brownsville; Gaby Grossman, 8th-grader from South Padre Island; Amaravi Ham Hernandez, 7th-grader from Brownsville; Ariana Mancillas, 8th-grader from Brownsville; Isabella Mitchell, 7th-grader from Brownsville; Marialuisa Montelongo, 7th-grader from Brownsville; Angelina Pajeski, 8th-grader from Rancho Viejo; Rita Quesada, 8th-grader from Harlingen; Elyssa Ruvio, 8th-grader from San Benito; Marifer Solis, 8th-grader from Brownsville and Zoe Voreis, 8th-grader from Los Fresnos.
