Twenty-four members of the South Texas Preparatory Academy (STPA) chess team competed at the Region X Chess Tournament at Edinburg High School, Jan. 28-29.
In the team standings, the STPA Spartans Championship Team (900 rating and above) placed first, and the JV Team (899 rating and below) placed second.
Members of the Championship Team include: Riya Manohar of McAllen, Eric Mendoza of Edinburg, Alvaro David Mayorga-Kintanar of Mission and Noel Aguilar of Edinburg.
Members of the JV Team include: Sebastian Regener of McAllen, Alvaro Guerra of Alton, Aaron Garza of Mission and Jake Lanoue of McAllen.
In the individual Championship middle school standings, STPA had nine members place: Riya Manohar-1st, Alvaro David Mayorga-2nd, Eric Mendoza-4th, Noel Aguilar-7th, Abel Babuji-8th, Mauricio Villarreal-11th, Aiden Gomez-19th, Keith Biteng-26th and Swadepto Chakraborty-28th.
In the individual JV middle school standings, STPA had 11 students place: Sebastian Regener-5th, Aaron Cruz-24th, Jake Lanoue-33rd, Arthur Cabo-37th, Aibel Jose-51st, Daniel Hernandez-61st, Amrit Bhakta-75th, Matthew Urbina-84th, Aaron Ramirez-102nd, Sofia Martinez-121st and Benicio Palacios-124th.
All 24 STPA chess team members will compete at the 2017 South Texas Scholastic State Championships at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, March 10-12.
